About

As a clay artist working in the beautiful area of the North Carolina mountains, I find plenty to be inspired about. The approach I use to create individual works involves alternative firing practices that rely on spontaneity and chance.

 

My exploration into clay has come from an appreciation from working with my hands and the satisfaction that comes from that. Clay offers a never-ending process that one can never exhaust.  There is the cerebral aspect of a concept-based art medium that has limitless possibilities and the technical science that must be understood to bring an idea to actuality.

 

My approach breaches both of those and drives the personal creative process. The raku firing techniques I use allow, too, for an open invitation of the work to be defined at the final stage by sheer randomness of process. The materials added during the firing, the thermodynamics, the smoking aspect, all determine the coloring and patterning of the piece.
